La Fille mal Gardée translates to “The Poorly Guarded Girl.”
It is a comic ballet presented in two acts, inspired by Pierre-Antoine Baudouin’s 1789 painting, Laréprimande/Une jeune fille querellée par sa mère. It is classical ballet’s supreme romantic comedy: a heartfelt tale of illicit young love, but also a giddy whirl of dancing chickens and curmudgeonly guardians.
Brian Murphy’s choreography, along with the music and costume designs, creates such an uplifting mood. It’s vibrant, hilarious and the energy is extremely high. He combines some very touching moments, where the love of the two lead characters, Colas and Lise is very obvious! The stellar cast includes Brian Murphy as Colas, Lieneke Matte from Verb Ballets as Lise. Other roles include Michael Hinton as Widow Simone & Megan Stuart as the Village Jester.
“La Fille Mal Gardee is the most perfect ballet in the world ever. The most perfect thing to happen on a stage. ” So tweeted one ballet fan after our preview show in June at our new theatre. She summed it up perfectly because there is no other ballet that creates quite the same rush of sheer happiness. It is a simple tale of love prevailing. Not against near-immutable forces, but against the inconvenience of a widowed mother who wants her daughter to marry for money instead of love. Brian Murphy is a very likable Colas, Lieneke Matte is a sprightly, yet elegant Lise and Michael Hinton brings more than a touch of witty humor to his portrayal of the Widow Simone. The choreography of La Fille is notoriously demanding. The final pas de deux with Lise and Colas is encompassed with billowy loveliness. A true treat for the entire family to experience. Coming this October 2016.
